There are some characteristics that differentiate diesel and natural gas gensets. Their added value depends on the objectives for which they will be used and the customer's concerns (in terms of emissions and cost, for example). Both have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is important to understand which of the products best suits your needs.
DIESEL GENERATORS
Main advantages:
- Diesel generators have great portability and easy access to fuel;
- The maintenance cost for generators running continuously is lower for diesel generators;
- Diesel is less flammable when compared to other fuel sources.
Main disadvantages:
- Diesel emission levels are high, and in order to comply with the legislation, a filtering system has to be added, which makes the final cost of the generator more expensive.
NATURAL GAS GENERATORS
Main advantages:
- Natural gas can be used to power generators for operation, either in emergency or on a continuous basis, and is considered one of the most accessible and efficient fuels for energy generation, among non-renewable resources;
- When compared to other fossil fuels, such as coal, diesel and gasoline, the natural gas emissions are much lower. In addition, only coal (which is not considered for these services because it is highly polluting) is cheaper;
- Natural gas is ideal for cogeneration systems, because it can be easily reused in the form of heat, steam, hot water and oil heating.
Main disadvantages:
- Natural gas generators are mainly used in areas that have an uninterrupted supply of this fuel, through a dedicated network;
- In the event of natural disasters or disasters, the supply systems can affect the availability of the network, since this fuel cannot be stored with the generator;
- Natural gas presents a greater risk of fire when compared to diesel;
- The engine and control system are more demanding, which affects the final price of the product, making it more expensive.
In terms of installation, both diesel and natural gas gensets have very similar needs and are able to serve the same type of applications, while both can be used continuously or in an emergency. In fact, the main differences between the two are related to the characteristics of the fuels – being natural gas the cheaper and more environmentally friendly one - and their accessibility - easier in the case of diesel generators.
To decide what is best for you and your business, you should evaluate the pros and cons of each installation, according to your needs and expectations.
