What is a genset?

A genset refers to an equipment whose function is to convert the so-called heat capacity into mechanical energy and then into electrical energy. Briefly, it consists of a motor and an alternator that is coupled and inserted in a base with other elements.

These complementary elements are:

  • batteries,
  • fuel tank,
  • control panel,
  • automatic transfer switch,
  • and soundproof.

In terms of use, gensets can usually be used as the main source or as an auxiliary source to respond to energy needs, in a credible and efficient way, whatever their application.

In relation to their operation, the gensets are composed of a generator, which comes into action through combustion in the engine with the help of the alternator. In relation to the fuel for this type of equipment, you can select between diesel, gasoline, natural gas, biogas, among others.

A genset can be assumed as a key element or allied weight for whatever the application or design. For example, in the design of an industrial project or in the field of construction where one of the inherent concerns is to ensure a continuous and reliable supply of energy.

Components of a genset:

  • Alternator: to select an alternator you must first define what your purpose is and the working conditions. One of the most used alternators is the Stamford model, as it is quite reliable, and its quality is recognized. This range has several powers and is ready to couple several engines, according to the needs.
  • Engine: is a basic component of gensets and is designed with the aim of contributing to improved productivity and performance. Perkins engines are an example of reliability and safety, being prepared to meet demanding requirements and standards as well as adverse weather conditions.
  • Soundproof Cabin: it is a plate that can be made of steel, stainless steel or aluminum, with anti-corrosion treatment and that ensures the efficiency of the air flow that will cool the engine.
  • Automatic Transfer Switch: responsible for the alternation between the main source and the auxiliary source, in case the source fails, thus ensuring the continuous supply of energy
  • Control panel: considered the "brain" of a genset is to monitor and protect the gensets.
  • Base frame: is a steel frame with anti-vibration system that has a tank to store the fuel, and may or may not serve to raise the generator to a certain height, depending on the number of liters that the customer wants.
